The port of Odessa which was awarded the Order of Lenin by the Soviet Government, is the gateway to the Ukraine. Ships flying the flags of many nations speed their way here from all corners of the earth. A new maritime station equipped with the last word in technology and designed to cater for 2,000 passengers was recently built in this Hero-city. Automatic cranes and special machines for loading cars on board ship, conveyers for transporting passengers’ luggage, lifts and escalators are used here.
The maritime station, one of a large group of installations, is built on a new pier opposite the historic Potyomkin steps.
The berthing-line stretches about a kilometre which makes it possible for five passenger or cargo ships to come into port or make ready for sailing simultaneously.
Passengers embark via eight gantry gangways linking the forecourt of the station to the ships.
The maritime station consists of a main building, warehouses, a passenger terminal in Primorskaya Street, passageways and subways connecting Primorskaya Street with the station forecourt, which is complete with shops and kiosks and a left-luggage office.
An escalator takes passengers from the terminal in Primorskaya Street to the subway leading to the station forecourt, the main building and the quay.
The main building contains ticket counters, a post-office, counters for the sale of Aeroflot and railway tickets, a first-aid post, a mother-and- child room, a restaurant, bars, a customs hall and an embarkation lounge.
Apart from its basic functions, the maritime station with its spacious balconies, flat roof and a wide promenade is a favourite recreation spot both with the numerous tourists and local residents.
The Odessa maritime station is the largest in the country. An enormous café has been opened on the roof and the basement provides useful storage space, including a special section set aside for citrus fruits.
This whole group of buildings was designed by architects V. Golovin and V. Kremlikov in collaboration with architect I. Alber and engineer Shaikis.
The simple, clear-cut line of the principal buildings, the glass walls, open balconies, the sun awnings the length of the quay give this architectural ensemble the air of a functional modern transportation centre.
This architectural composition provides the finishing touch to the older historical part of the city with its Primorsky Boulevard and the Potyomkin steps.
The Odessa port is the starting point of many passenger sea routes.
